Dirt Merchants is a full service workshop. We offer professional and personalised mechanic services and emphasise building ongoing relationships with our customers and their bikes. Our mechanics treat each bike equally. When you bring in your bike, our experienced staff will take the time to assess and discuss the best servicing options for your bike or arrange to contact you to confirm the details before work commences. Our aim is to offer you the highest quality servicing – regardless of the size of the job.

We are equipped with quality parts and are regularly involved with training workshops to stay ahead of the game with the set-up and servicing requirements of the latest products. We have a policy of test riding and double checking all our booked in jobs for performance and safety before you ride away.

The list below outlines our service packages from basic tune-ups to complete overhauls. You will also find a selection of the a la carte servicing options.

Our workshop is open Tuesday-Friday for servicing and Saturday for on-the-spot repairs. All prices are for labour only, parts are extra unless noted.

CORE SERVICES

The Basic Service is a great option for a pre-race check and tune or if you are on a budget and are simply looking to keep your bike running smoothly. Parts additional.

  • Check and adjust brakes and shifting
  • Lube the chain, derailleur pivots and brake pivots
  • Proper tire inflation
  • Inspect, align and adjust handlebar and stem bolts, as well as all bolts and mounting hardware
  • Clean the frame
  • Realign derailleur hanger

The General Service is our most popular service, ideal for any bike that has completed its share of missions and now needs a revival. Parts additional.

  • The One Hour Service Service +
  • True, dish, and retention the wheels
  • Check and adjust bottom bracket, headset, and hub bearings
  • Fitting of shifter and brake cables
  • Degrease and lube chain

The Deluxe Service is a thorough overhaul, great for hard working commuter, mountain and road bikes. Bikes are often exposed to a lot of muddy, gritty conditions in New Zealand so bottom brackets, seat posts, hubs and headset fastenings need to be removed, serviced and refitted periodically to avoid components becoming seized. We highly recommended this as an annual service or in preparation for the coming race season.  This is a full inspection of your bike and covers the labour component of replacing all worn or damaged parts other than frame pivot bearings required to bring your bike back up to tip top condition. It also includes the labour for a rear shock air can service. Parts additional.

  • A full overhaul of your bike
  • Clean, grease, adjust the bottom bracket, front & rear hubs, and head set
  • Bleed & adjust disc brakes
  • Shock air can service
  • Inspect and properly tension all bolts & hardware
  • Thorough clean of frame & parts including degreasing the chain, cassette and chainrings.

Workshop labour rate: $80 per hour (GST inclusive)

Please note: Bikes delivered for servicing that are too dirty to work on will have to be washed. This will incur a $30 bike wash charge additional to the service.

SUSPENSION SERVICES

Recommended at 50 hours. Removal of forks lower legs, all oil in open bath dampers, air spring chamber and lube oil drained. Castings cleaned and reassembled with new oil and dust wiper seals. This is a great service to protect your fork from expensive upper tube “stanchion” damage that can occur when dust seals fail letting fork leg lubrication run dry and dirty. We recommended this service be conducted between full fork service intervals.Key aspects of this service:

  • Air and oil seal check
  • Adjuster function check
  • Lower leg removal
  • Cleaning of lower and upper tubes and disposal of used oil
  • Dust seal and on some models oil bath foam ring replacement


Recommended at 100hours. A full suspension fork service should be conducted at least every 12 months on forks that get regular use throughout the year.  Over time contaminants build up inside forks that eventually impede performance and accelerate wear on internal parts and seals.  Your fork will be completely disassembled during the overhaul so that parts can be cleaned, repaired or replaced.

Removal of  the forks lower legs, all oil in open bath dampers and damper cartridges drained, air spring chamber and lube oil drained.  Castings and internal components disassembled as required to clean, inspect and replace all seals.

  • Full disassembly of serviceable parts
  • Full clean of working parts
  • Dust seals and on some models oil bath foam ring replacement
  • Full inspection of oil and /or air seals and replacement if required
  • Full re-lube and hydraulic oil change


Recommended at 30 – 50 hours. It is generally recommended that your air sleeve be serviced more frequently at 30 hours of riding in wet and muddy conditions, to maintain optimal performance and avoid shock body damage.

Key aspects of this service:

  • Pre service air can pressure check, recording of shock settings and adjuster function check
  • Removal of air can and old seals
  • Fitting of new seal kit
  • Re-lube of air can assembly
  • Shocks drive unit “DU” bushing replacement
  • Re-pressure check
  • Re-fit to bike


Note: For servicing or repair of shock dampers units, in some cases shocks may need to be sent back to the national service agent.

Dropper posts are subject to eccentric loads by nature and are often exposed to mud buildup from the rear tyre. As grit builds up and grease no longer lubricates moving parts well enough, bushings and seals begin to wear and over time dropper posts sag, stick down and develop excess fore and aft play. For Rockshox Reverb posts this is an extensive service where we completely dismantle all parts, clean and inspect, replace o-rings, bushings and dust wiper seals as well as bleed the post’s damping circuits and hydraulic remote. For KS dropper posts having sealed cartridge units and cable remotes it is a simpler procedure where we dismantle, clean and inspect, and replace bushings and dust wiper seals as required.

  • Inspection and replacement of dust wiper seals, o-rings and bushings when applicable
  • Lube and reassembly of working parts
  • Bleed damping circuits and remote when applicable


A LA CARTE SERVICES

Shimano Brakes $30 each. Other brands $40 each. As a result of wear or damage to the braking system, hydraulic braking fluid can become contaminated with air and sediment that will often cause brakes to fade under hard braking and generally feel spongy at the lever.  Brake fluid also degrades as it ages and regular flushing of the fluid is recommended. Provided there is no lasting damage to the braking system a brake bleed will have them feeling as good as new. Pressure test inspection for sealing issues (trouble shooting).

Note:  Any repairs that are required before the bleed if done may not be included in the labour charge

  • Removal of brake unit from bike
  • Safety check of hydraulic hose fittings
  • External cleaning of slave pistons
  • Full flush through and disposal of old fluid
  • Re-fit to bike
  • Road test

$80 Wheel re-spoke / $100 Alloy Rim / $120 Carbon Fibre Rim. We can rebuild or build you a custom wheel or set of to meet your needs. Hand-built wheels offer many advantages over buying factory built wheel sets and we have the experience to help you select the best combination of components to achieve a cost effective build and maximise performance. Pre build quote specific to your requirements or requested specifications. Advice on component options to suit your performance, strength and budget needs.

Tubeless tyre system setup and fitting included. Wheel can be built specifically to align with your frame if required.

When building with carbon fibre rims we add in extra steps to the build process to make sure that spoke tension remains very even during the build process.
